David Brown got a proposal from Mayor Lori Lightfoot for the position of Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department on April 2, 2020. On April 15, he took over as Interim Superintendent, succeeding Charlie Beck, who served in that capacity following Eddie T. Johnson’s termination.
David Brown’s Life Background
Brown, a native of Dallas, attended the University of Texas at Austin after graduating from South Oak Cliff High School and before enrolling in the Dallas police academy with the initial goal of becoming a prosecutor.
He had previously spent six years as Dallas’ police chief. As a sniper ambushed five police officers in Dallas in 2016. Dallas police chief Brown found himself in the national limelight. After, he decided to utilize a remote-controlled robot armed with a bomb to take out the shooter.
Following Eddie Johnson’s dismissal by Lightfoot in April 2020, Brown assumed the position. When Brown arrived in Chicago, he had been a retired officer from the Dallas Police Department for four years. He turns 63 in September, which is also the mandatory CPD retirement age. Out of 25 applicants, Brown was one of three finalists selected by the Chicago Police Board as part of the nationwide search process for the position of Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department.
His Accomplishments As an Officer In Chicago
David Brown represents what it means to be a Chicago police officer with a history of integrity, honor, and legality. Brown will expand on our all-hands-on-deck commitment to achieve genuine, widespread, and long-lasting public safety in our neighborhoods. Also, through his nationally known leadership and years of on-the-ground work to establish a culture founded in openness, accountability, and community policing.
His dedication to neighborhood policing, along with his high level of ethics and his own story of service and sacrifice. Therefore this makes him a strong contender to succeed as Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department. In addition, to being extremely qualified, David Brown also offers the expertise and abilities required to manage the CPD both now and in the future.

The Reason For His Resignation
According to a statement, Brown is accepting a new position outside of the state.
Brown stated, “I have taken a position as the Chief Operations Officer of Loncar Lyon Jenkins, a personal injury legal company in Texas. I will stand down as superintendent of the Chicago Police Department on March 16, 2023. By this, it will allow the incoming mayor to start the hiring process for the new superintendent soon.”
Brown’s statement added, “Working with the courageous people of the Chicago Police Department has been an honor and a privilege. I’ll keep asking God for every officer to make it safely home to their families. God’s blessings on the city of Chicago and the people that defend and serve this wonderful city.”
David Brown’s Critics As An Officer
Brown stated that he chose to resign at this time so that the city’s new mayor may choose his replacement. Vallas and Johnson are people running to be the next mayor, stating that he failed to make the city safer. They believe that his resignation is positive. The next person they elect to be in Brown’s position has to meet their expectations. Such as someone who is collaborative, who is capable, caring, and genuinely cares about safeguarding, and serving the citizens of our city. Even a lot of people had high criticism towards him for other actions he took during his leadership and career.
In addition, Not everyone agrees that he failed as a superintendent. Some officers that have worked with Brown have gained his respect and stated that he is a role model to them and they have also learned a lot from him.
