Today, Dec. 10, 2020, at 8:45 a.m., a large blaze broke out at the Best Value Auto Body Supply factory at 4425 West 16th street.
A spokesperson for the fire department stated, a person inside called to report a fire on the roof of the building — no reports of anyone being injured.
Upon the call, CFD immediately dispatched over 200 firefighters to dissolve the flames quickly.
Larry Merritt, a CFD spokesperson, reported, the fire was “fully engulfed, and the damage was extensive.” The black smoke was visible for miles, and the building will likely be demolished.
CTA rerouted 18th Steet, 16th Street, Pulaski, and Cicero buses in the area.
While on the scene, over 100 crews were working. Several ambulances, news reporters, and a few neighbors were out as well. One neighbor stated he has not heard of anyone being hurt, and there is no information on what caused the fire at the time.
They are still on the scene and will possibly be there for a while due to the smoke. They are working hard to put the smoke out and prevent any further damage, especially to surrounding buildings.
The work done to stop the spread of this fire by CFD was done promptly to ensure safety for residents and those who travel through the area.
As I approached the scene, crews were still ensuring that the flames are out. I was able to capture photos of the black smoke and some crews still working on the scene. Witnessing the work done to effortlessly put out a fire, work together, and report no injuries, was a great start to my day.
This story is still being updated. More info to come.
