The 64th annual Grammy’s Awards, originally scheduled for Jan. 31, 2022, has been postponed. No new date has been announced. The recording academy has announced the nominations for each of the 86 categories. One of Chi-town’s own, BJ the Chicago Kid is in the running to win a Grammy.
This year’s Grammy has a new Latin category. Last year the Grammys merged pop and urban albums into one competition but this year urban music will be awarded as Best Musica Urbana Album.
The general fields nominations include Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Pop, Dance/Electronic Music, Contemporary Instrumental Music, Rock, Alternative, R&B, Rap, Country, New Age, Jazz, Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music, Latin, American Roots Music, Reggae, Global Music, Children’s, Spoken Word, Comedy, Musical Theater, Music for Visual Media, Composing/Arranging, Package, Notes, and Historical, Production, Classical, Music Video/Film.
Nominees for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance: Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga for “I Get A Kick Out Of You;” Justin Bieber and benny blanco’s recording, “Lonely;” BTS for “Butter;” Coldplay’s “Higher Power;” and Doja Cat Featuring SZA for “Kiss Me More.”
Best Pop Vocal Album nominees are Justin Beiber, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and Olivia Rodrigo.
The Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Best Gospel Performance/Song awards artists and songwriters for the best traditional Christian, roots gospel, or contemporary gospel single or track. The songs are “Voice of God,” Dante Bowe; “Joyful,” Dante Bowe; “Help,” Anthony Brown and Group Therapy; “Never Lost,” CeCe Winans; and “Wait On You,” Elevation Worship.

This year the Grammys will be featuring an artist from Chicago. In the R&B under 18 in Best Traditional Performance the nominees are BJ The Chicago Kid, PJ Morton, and Kenyon Dixon, featuring Charlie Bereal. Other nominees are “I Need You” by Jon Batiste; “Born Again” by Leon Bridges featuring Robert Glasper; “Fight For You” by H.E.R.; and “How Much Can A Heart Take” by Lucky Daye featuring Yebba.
Bryan James Sledge known by his stage name BJ The Chicago Kid was born on Nov. 23, 1984. He grew up in Chicago’s South Side in Brainerd. He taught himself how to play the drums and piano releasing his debut album “Pineapple Now-Laters” in 2012. BJ has gone on since to earn multiple Grammy nominations, three in 2019, three in 2016, and one in 2014.
This year Grammys will be hosted by Trevor Noah, host of “The Daily Show. He is back for his second year. Harvey Mason Jr., Recording Academy CEO, and Tammy Hurt, Recording Academy Board of Trustees Chair, will together reveal the nominations for the 64th Grammy Awards.
