Highland Park High School, and all district school affiliated, have been placed on lockdown after a report of a student “potentially” possessing a gun on campus. Just after 11 a.m., the city of Highland Park posted an update on Facebook saying, “Please be advised of a heavy police presence at Highland Park High School.”
Incident at Highland Park
At that time they did not have any reports of any shots fired, according to the update. Additionally, they have advised all staff and students to “remain in place to facilitate the work of law enforcement to secure the building.”
There will be an update on cityhpil.com as soon as the building has been secured.
District 113 superintendent, Bruce Law, emailed families at 11:30 a.m. to update them on the situation. Law stated they had received “an anonymous tip reporting a rumor of a student in possession of a gun.” Immediately afterward they reported the tip to the police department.
As the investigation began to unfold another student came forward saying they too had seen a student with a firearm. “At that point, Highland Park Police Department was already on the scene and advised HPHS to go into lockdown,” stated Law.
Student Identified
The student alleged to have the firearm has been identified, according to the email. That student and another one are seen on security footage leaving the building. Furthermore, the students have been found and apprehended.
Earlier in the day a few dozen students at the high school were seen conducting a walkout in support of gun safety. The walkout was planned. The students conducted the walkout in response to the 2021 Fourth of July Shooting at the Highland Park Parade. They were also bringing awareness about the school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee. NBC 5 was at the scene reporting on the scheduled walkout.
This is an ongoing investigation.
