The Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship at the Illinois Institute of Technology leader, Maryam Saleh’s mission is to make sure that Chicagoans can learn how to “grow their own businesses,” according to WTTW.
She wants to make technology entrepreneurship within the reach of those desiring the opportunity to start up a new company or build upon the foundation already in place. Saleh supports the goal Kaplan is to teach people how to be business owners through learning.
Saleh says she likes the cross-discipline approach that the institute of technology offers. She comes from a family of entrepreneurs and believes thinking as one is in her blood.
She recalls that as a computer engineer student at Brown University she was introduced to some neuroscientists who wanted to understand how a brain implant that had been used in animal research in order to use it in a clinical setting. As a result, she joined their startup as a founding engineer. The business commercialized a brain implant used to restore movement for paralyzed people.
She was hooked, she loved working with the startup and has worked with startups ever since. That is the energy and desire she offers for fellow Chicagoans.
