Former “Amazing Race Canada” contestant, Kenneth McAlpine, was found dead on a mountain in British Columbia on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2019.
On his 28th birthday, McAlpine was hiking alone and suffered a “substantial fall” in the Kootenay region, according to his family. After he did not return home on time, rescue teams launched a search for McAlpine.
Malcolm McAlpine, the hiker’s father, told Canada’s Global News that his son lived life to the fullest.
He said: “He packed a lot in, that’s for sure. He embraced life, he was brave, and he was a pretty cool guy. Someone told me, ‘He was the kind of guy you’d want your daughter to marry.’ Everyone loved him. He made his mark.”
“The Amazing Race Canada” – for which McAlpine finished second during the show’s fifth season in 2017, stated that they are “heartbroken over the loss.”
“Part of TEAM GIVER, Kenneth’s infectious personality left a lasting impression not only on us, but with viewers across the country. His family and friends are in our thoughts and hearts during this difficult time.”
McAlpine worked as a chef at Gabriella’s Restaurant. His boss described him as a great chef who loved the mountains where he died. “Kenneth was one of the most awesome people that we have had the opportunity to work with and know.”
The coroner’s office is investigating his death. He fell approximately 823 feet while hiking, according to South Columbia Search and Rescue’s Mike Hudson. He told CBC News that the mountain was a popular hiking spot for experienced climbers.
