The Los Angeles Lakers terminated coach Darvin Ham after only just two seasons on May 3. The franchise will now conduct a job hunt in an effort of locating the right candidate to optimize what is expected to be the final chapter of LeBron James’. Darvin Ham, having only two years left on his contract, finished 90-74 in the regular season and 9-12 postseason. Darvin Ham also led the Lakers to their first in-season tournament victory in Las Vegas in December.
The decision occurred shortly after the Lakers were defeated by the Denver Nuggets for the second consecutive season. Although Lebron James and Anthony Davis playing more than 70 total games since joining forces in Los Angeles in 2018, the Los Angeles Lakers only received the number 7 seed in a deep Western Conference field.
The Lakers struggled to hold a lead in the double digits in each of the four series losses, including the 20-point advantage in Game 2. Darvin Ham joined the Lakers squad fresh off one of the franchise’s most disappointing seasons. Failing to be eligible for the playoffs after trading numerous key players critical to L.A.’s 2020 championship for Russell Westbrook.
Los Angeles began Darvin Ham’s first season with a 2-10 record, and the team’s roster was entirely revamped. After parting ways with Westbrook, the squad revamped with D’Angelo Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Rui Hachimura to compliment James, Davis, and Austin Reaves.
Coaching Candidates for the Lakers
Their decision to fire Darvin Ham implies that the Lakers are going to recruit an additional head coach under Pelinka’s tenure, and Luke Walton. Front managers rarely have the job stability to recruit an additional coach. Ultimately, ownership begins to question if the appropriate individuals are making the choice.
Number 1, Ty Lue, the Los Angeles Clippers may have preferred that he didn’t coach their cross-town rivals. The actual conditions of his deal remain undisclosed. After the Clippers recruited him in 2020, they reportedly gave him a five-year contract. He isn’t believed to have committed an agreement, but Steve Ballmer had signed prior to coach Doc Rivers to a contract without the press being aware.
Coaching contracts usually include team incentives in the final year, and Ty Lue’s proved no exception. That possibility was allegedly pursued last offseason, but managers of Ty Lue’s caliber rarely coached throughout contract years. In some form or another, his involvement with the Los Angeles Clippers will become clear in a short time. It’s important to note that the NBA doesn’t appear to feel Ty Lue is committed to his present team. Last offseason, there had been speculation that both the Bucks and the Suns might be interested.
Number 2, Mike Budenholzer, all can shoot threes, defend the hoop, and they never foul. Budenholzer established more consistent regular-season approach than any other NBA coach. If the team is functioning properly, it will live up to or beyond predictions. Each of the five of his Bucks team won at least 60% of their games. Budenholzer’s previously won 60 matches for the Hawks, a team known for its lack of stars. Budenholzer’s also led Milwaukee to the 2021 title. Every organization seeking a coach this offseason will contact Budenholzer.
Rob Pelinka Releases Statement After Firing Darvin Ham
Darvin Ham, the Los Angeles Lakers’ head coach for the past two years, was officially dismissed on Friday, May 3, 2024.
Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ vice chairman of basketball operations and GM, stated, “We truly value Darvin’s work for the benefit of the Los Angeles Lakers and acknowledge the many accomplishments over the past two seasons. Especially the team’s incredible run to the Western Conference finals. We’d want to congratulate Darvin for his commitment and positive attitude. Although it was a difficult choice to come to, it was the wisest option after a thorough analysis of this season. This organization will stay steadfast in its dedication to providing championship basketball to Lakers fans across the world.”
According to Pelinka, the organization deliberated extensively before firing Darvin Ham, but ultimately decided it was appropriate to make a change.
In Darvins’ two seasons as head coach of the Lakers, Ham went 90-74, finishing eighth in the Western Conference both times. He managed to bring the team onto the pace after a rocky start in the two seasons, but it was not sufficient as they lost to the Denver Nuggets in the 2023.
The Lakers’ objective has always been to take home the NBA championship, so they will now look for a new coach who can help them achieve that goal.
