Dear Reader,
Welcome to another edition of the Phalanx Family Services pullout section of the Chicago Leader newspaper. We have some exciting things to report about our summer activities. On August 5, we hosted our 10th Annual Back-to-School event to resounding success. Even though it rained the entire time, we still carried on and had a very well-attended event. Scores of community members enjoyed the free food, exhibitors, games, rides, school supplies, and free giveaways. We are sincerely grateful to our many funders, supporters, community residents, and staff for supporting us.
Spotlight for Phalanx
I’d like to spotlight the work of our Violence Prevention program. Our team of three outreach workers, led by Coordinator Lee Taylor, does tremendous work in the streets, on the frontlines, doing what they can to engage at-risk youth and prevent violence in our communities.
They are like our fireman, they run into conflict where everyone else runs away. In addition to mediating scores of gang conflicts throughout the year, this summer, they hosted Summer Kickbacks, which were a series of outdoor social events held onsite in our parking lot.
They barbequed, served free food, hosted games, had live DJs, played games, and promoted our various programs, services, opportunities, and events to community youth. Our Violence Prevention team also hosted weekly pop-ups in crime hotspots throughout the Far South community. I am very proud of the work carried out by the Violence Prevention team and the impact it has in our community.
Digital Literacy
Our Digital Literacy program has been growing by leaps and bounds with increasing numbers of community members attending our free classes. We offer basic computer training along with access to NorthStar and Coursera online credentialing. This program provides an important resource for community members to learn how to use a computer, be able to job search, and gain industry-recognized credentials in several disciplines to increase their marketability.

Future Events
Look forward to our annual “Fall Fest” on Saturday, October 28. There will be free food, live music, entertainment, games, raffles, rides, goodie bags, and giveaways. We hope you’ll join us for Autumn season and Halloween fun!
Statistics are showing that cases are on the rise nationwide, so we hope you’ll take advantage of every opportunity to protect yourself and make our communities safer, healthier, and stronger against the threat of COVID-19 by getting vaccinated and boosted.
With so much to offer, we are certain you will find something of interest and benefit to you and your family in this pullout section. Thank you for your interest in us. We look forward to serving you and hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely,
Tina Sanders
