On Tuesday there was a shooting at 11:40 a.m. near the corner of 53rd Street and South Woodlawn Avenue in Hyde Park.
According to the University of Chicago Police, a man was seen on foot carrying a handgun near the Kimbark Plaza Shopping Center. Reportedly, the man fired shots when the patrolling officer pulled over to investigate. The officer responded by discharging his weapon and striking the shooter.
Employees at Nicky’s Chinese Restaurant reported that they saw at least 10 flashes of light from the gunfire during the shooting.
The evidence markers indicate the shooting occurred in the middle of the intersection. Several streets in a three-block radius, and the shopping plaza were shut down hours after the shooting.
First responders stated the man, in his 20s, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition. The officer has been placed on mandatory leave pending an investigation into the shooting by the Chicago Police Department and the university.
