New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has received a second superseding indictment against him. Menendez has been accused of accepting gifts and other bribes from Qatar as part of a yearslong correction scheme. Furthermore, prosecutors have stated the senator’s bribery and extortion scheme continued into 2023. Which is a year longer than they originally believed.
Latest Allegations
The latest allegations claim the New Jersey Senator helped a state developer get a multimillion-dollar investment from a company tied to Qatar by making positive statements about the country. Furthermore, the indictment cited Fred Daibes as the developer who got the deal from Qatar. Subsequently, Daibes has also been charged in the case.
Moreover, discussions for the investment deal took place in late 2021 into 2022. At which time, Menendez is accused of making numerous supportive statements about Qatar. Furthermore, these statements were provided to Daibes by Menendez. The indictment stated this was done “so that Daibes could share them with the Qatari Investor and a Qatari government official associated with the Qatari Investment Company.”
Additionally, Menendez’s wife, Nadine (a.k.a Nadine Arslanian), has also been named as a defendant in the indictment. Furthermore, they have both been accused of engaging in a “corrupt relationship” involving three New Jersey associates and businessmen “Will Hana” (Wael Hana), Daibes, and Jose Uribe.
Results of Menendez’s Corrupt Relationship
Allegedly, Menendez promised to partake in “a series of acts and breaches of official duty.” In return, the U.S. Senator would receive” bribes that benefitted him both directly and indirectly through” his wife.
Furthermore, the New Jersey Senator promised to use his power and influence to breach his duties in ways that benefited Hana and the Government of Egypt. Moreover, the senator is also accused of using his official position to improperly advise and pressure a U.S. Department of Agriculture official. Which in doing so protected “a business monopoly” Egypt granted Hana.
Additionally, Menendez is accused of using his powerful position to help Uribe by disrupting a criminal investigation. Furthermore, he disrupted the “prosecution undertaken by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office” related to Uribe and his associates.
Further Criminal Acts
Next, the U.S. Senator knowingly accepted payment from Daibes with the understanding Menendez was expected to use his powers to help him. At the time, Diabes was seeking millions of dollars from an investment funded by Qatar.
Additionally, the senator promised to and took part in a series of acts on Egypt’s behalf. Which included the country’s military and intelligence officials. Moreover, he conspired to do so with the help of Hana and his wife.
Furthermore, some of the bribes Menendez took included gold, a luxury vehicle, home furnishings, and cash. In fact, investigators discovered over $480,000 in cash spread all around the home shared by the New Jersey Senator and his wife. Additionally, they found more than $70,000 in a safe deposit box in Nadine’s name.
However, the New Jersey Democrat has vigorously denied any wrongdoings.
