Stacy Gates did what now?
The President of the Chicago Teachers Union, Stacy Davis Gates, who was against private schools, has now put her child in one. Davis Gate’s own social media post and multiple other sources confirmed that she sent her child to a Catholic high school in Chicago.
She has also faced a lot of backlash for sending her oldest child to a catholic school. As Stacy enrolled her child in a private high school, to ensure the safety of Gates, we will not mention the name of the child and the school.
On March 6 of last year, Davis Gates made a statement that showed her dedication to the coalition. She mentioned that she sends her children to CPS, demonstrating her belief in the organization. As of now, it seems like she has lost that dedication and sent her child to a private school.

Davis Gates has also said sending her kid to a private school was a statement to show the less funding going into Chicago Public School and helps show why it’s important to fight for fully funded neighborhood public schools.
But we can see why Davis Gates wouldn’t want her kid in her neighborhood high school. As her neighborhood school is Harlan Community Academy, which is ranked 437 of the 664 Illinois high schools. This isn’t the first time a political leader has sent their kids to a private school. We have seen the same case for people such as Mayor Brandon Johnson and even former mayors like Richard Daley, and Rahm Emanuel, And our most recent former Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
As Davis Gates showed, she is against the Illinois Invest in Kids program in the past. But now there’s no knowing what she thinks of it now. But regardless of her opinion, the Teacher Union stated they would stay against this program.
Not the only one, but why?
Even Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, have sent their kids to private schools. Even though they are fighting against it.
But we can’t blame them due to the COVID-19 lockdowns happening. It showed parents what their kids were actually being taught and not being taught. It shined the light on the poor education in public schools. And with that private school enrollment went up in the past two years, not just in Illinois but all over the country as private schools went up public school enrollment has gone down all over.
Between the fall of 2019 and 2020, public school enrollment has gone down by around 3% which took a decade of growth in enrollment. But on the other hand, private school enrollment went up by 1.7% from 2020 to 2022.
But the private schools, or even different educational options, can be utilized on state levels or even on larger scales/ This could be done by making tax credit scholarships, school vouchers, and education savings account programs.
There are programs that provide families with the opportunity to choose and have more control over their children’s education. Regardless of their social and economic status. Nevertheless, the UTC and the ACLU hold a different view, as they see the use of public funds to support private schools as an issue.
