Syd Jerome Menswear was looted for the fourth time in a 7-month-period, according to CNN on Aug.12, 2020. The Chicago Loop business owner, Scott Shapiro, says this is personal. In a video he provided the police after the first incident, he is brutally beaten while trying to defend the store.
Images showed vandalism, broken glass, and the store in shambles. Shapiro says he has lost over a million dollars worth of merchandise this year. Syd Jerome Menswear is a luxury store known for its nice fabrics.
Shapiro stated that “It affects families! It doesn’t affect just a store or glass or merchandise. It comes out of our pockets.” He added: “I frankly don’t know how we’re going to continue to survive if we keep having incidents that have transpired in the past. We’ll be out of business and the city will lose part of its legacy.”
In the recent events of the Black Lives Matter movement, there has been an increase in looting. A separate group of people is taking matters into their own hands by approaching the issue of systematic racism by looting and setting fires to stores. Their argument, ” You can’t steal from a country that stole everything it has gotten.” Peaceful protestors and activists say that they do not associate with these people. Some even believe that the riots were influenced by policemen to make these protests seem violent.
