The ‘One Piece’ Manga

“One Piece” is a Japanese manga and anime series created by Eiichiro Oda. It made its debut in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997 and has since become one of the most popular and longest-running manga series in history. As of Oct. 1, 2023, 1,078 episodes of “One Piece” have aired, currently in its twentieth season, according to Wikipedia.

The story follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate with the ability to stretch his body like rubber after eating a Devil Fruit. Luffy aspires to become the Pirate King by finding the legendary treasure known as the “One Piece.” Luffy’s journey takes him and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, through a vast and perilous world filled with powerful foes, unique islands, and a bunch of cool characters.

The ‘One Piece’ Live-Action Adaptation:

Don’t get me wrong, when I first heard about Netflix making the adaptation I thought to myself “It’s just going to be bad” simply because…well…it’s Netflix. These are the same people who are STILL producing bigmouth to this day -no shade though. However, with TikTok in my ear yapping about the characters, specifically my favorites: Luffy and Buggy the Clown, I had to see what the tea was about. Below is a bit of background of what our new straw hat crew will look like.

Netflix announced plans for a live-action adaptation of “One Piece,” creating significant excitement among some fans. The adaptation is being developed in partnership with Eiichiro Oda, the manga’s creator, who serves as an executive producer. Eiichiro Oda expressed his dedication to maintaining the series’ integrity and promised that the live-action adaptation would stay true to the source material.

Some may have had discourse that the characters aren’t “anime or Japanese enough” For those who think this, the characters are in fact all different ethnicities, Oda even said they were in an interview back in 2015.  Diverse characters in the live-action should be expected. And it’s a live-action — ideally some things should look more realistic than as exaggerated as the anime.

The live-action only has one season so far with a sum of eight episodes. Each episode is about one hour long. In the adaptation they covered 100 episodes in just these eight.

It premiered August 31, so it’s been out for quite a while now. By the way, the cast members were announced way back in September 2021.

  • Monkey D. Luffy: Actor Iñaki Godoy.
  • Roronoa Zoro: Actor Mackenyu.
  • Nami: Actress Emily Rudd.
  • Usopp: Actor Jacob Romero Gibson.
  • Sanji: Actor Taz Skylar.

Plot Setting and a Small Review

It is expected that the series will follow the general storyline of the original manga

Now as a prund weeb, I know my manga, and One Piece is definitely one of them. In the show, there have been a few switch-ups in live-action, but I can confirm that the general plot is still the same. They added a few small details — took some out to but I’m pretty sure they did it for the run time. This is one piece we’re talking about — why would you want to watch 1,078 episodes of a live-action when you can just watch the show?

Anyway, I think it’s pretty good. The pacing was a little fast for me, but I don’t have a real problem with it. The acting was…it was definitely moving. I shed a tear watching The Arlong Park Arc, but maybe it’s because I’m dramatic. You can see the actors really were submersed in their roles — I was almost convinced that the one piece was real!

All jokes aside, for this to be on Netflix this is honestly one of the BEST live actions I’ve seen so far.

Will We Get a Second Season?

Netflix announced the second season in a video with the series’ and even teased Chopper, according to polygon.com. Producer Marty Adelstein even said that the scripts for season 2 are already done. There hasn’t been much news on when it’ll be coming out officially but sources now say it’ll be between September 2024 and March 2025.

Khalyse Hemingway

Hello, my name is Khalyse Hemingway. I'm 17 years old and I'm an African American artist. I enjoy things like drawing, baking, reading, and video games. At the age of 13, I became a Chicago resident in the Lawndale community. Since then I've been attending North Lawndale College Prep. However, as a Senior, this will be my final year (2023). I've learned many things and met many people from my experiences here. They made me as independent and as hard-working as I am today. Most importantly, Chicago has taught me "to chase my dreams." As a child, I loved to create, but I gradually started to fall out of my beloved hobby. Hoverer, this all changed when I started to move homes. In these episodes, I would often entertain myself by drawing. From comic books, novels, and more, I rewound my passion for art. Taking these interests into my new life at North Lawndale, my fellow classmates recognized me for my talents and encouraged me to make use of them. I aspire to be as great as they describe me to be. With every word I type and every picture I draw, I'll never let go of my passions again. By Khalyse Hemingway
