What Exactly is Birthright Citizenship?
There are many parents that were born in different countries, who come to the United States seeking a better life and more opportunities. Here in the United States, these same parents then conceive children, in which those children are given citizenship within the United States. Therefore, birthright citizenship is the right that all children have when conceived, to be citizens within the United States, and have all the benefits that citizens have. These benefits include a social security number, applying for federal employment, and many others. Former President Donald Trump has many plans when it comes to birthright citizenship, as that is a big topic within the United States as of right now.
What is Trump Planning on Doing to Birthright Citizenship?
Trump made it clear from the beginning that in 2024, if he is re-elected, there will be a huge change when it comes to birthright citizenship. “Former President Trump is returning to his calls to remove birthright citizenship, with his 2024 White House campaign announcing Tuesday he would seek to end it via executive order on his first day in office,” according to The Hill. Therefore, within just one day, Trump plans on eradicating this amendment and re-shaping it completely. There have been several reactions that came along with this huge change, and many of those reactions are completely negative.
Reactions When It Comes to This Plan
As aforementioned, this plan seems impossible to many people, and at the same time, offensive. This is an amendment that is within the constitution, and therefore changing it, too many, would be plainly impossible, especially on the first day in office. There is a particular person who is arguing heavily against the plan that Trump is bringing about.
This person is Ben Domenech, who is a Fox News contributor, and co-founder of The Federalist. Domenech argues severely against this plan, and he even went on to say what he thinks would happen if Trump was re-elected and this plan was carried out. “Step 1: Trump issues day one Executive Order overturning 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship,” he wrote. “Step 2: Judge blocks order immediately Step 3: Trump complains, probably insulting judge’s heritage Step 4: Trump DOJ (purposefully?) loses case, cementing birthright citizenship,” according to Ben Domenech from Raw Story.
Other Presidential Candidates for 2024
Immigration has certainly been something to talk about in recent years. There have been many migrant families that have arrived in the United States, seeking a better life and more opportunities. However, there are too many people. The United States is trying to find a way to serve everyone without leaving anyone behind.
This can be incredibly difficult. Such a large amount of people are incredibly hard to manage, especially when they are around the entire nation. Therefore, these presidential candidates that are running for 2024, have mostly immigration in mind. Virtually all the candidates who’ve entered the race for the 2024 Republican nomination have placed immigration at the center of their platform.
“Trump is no exception. The former president has not only promised a hardline crackdown on border enforcement but has his own draconian policy record on immigration as president to run on,” according to Yahoo! Entertainment.
Therefore, Trump is certainly not the only one that has immigration in mind. However, many agree that the way Trump is approaching it is not the right path to take.
The Future of Immigration and Trump
If re-elected, there is no doubt that Trump will do everything in his power to make sure that this birthright citizenship is changed completely. However, there are numerous people that believe this is not going to be possible, and it would take more than four years for it to change even a little bit. However, there are many other presidential candidates, and there is a chance that they would approach immigration in a different manner.
