Taxpayers Being Wrongfully Charged for TurboTax

Taxes are already an incredibly huge hassle for many people to deal with. There are many families in the United States that already find it difficult to make ends meet. Taxes add to this burden. Unfortunately, taxes continue to rise year after year, and there seems to be nothing done for these lower-income families. There is not enough support for these families, and therefore they have nothing much to rely on when it comes to paying taxes.

The only way they can make ends meet is by acquiring more than one job, and therefore, they have no time to be home with their families. TurboTax wrongfully charging taxpayers for their services has been one extra burden on these families, and therefore a solution to this issue has been brought about by TurboTax itself.

There has been a settlement brought about by TurboTax itself. This initiative is to resolve the issue millions of Americans have endured. In May 2022, TurboTax’s owner Intuit agreed to pay $141 million to lower-income Americans who were “unfairly charged,” according to CNBC News.

How Many Americans Were Affected Exactly?

There is a large amount of Americans that are eligible to be a part of this settlement, as this scam was nationwide. Roughly 4.4 million consumers across the U.S. are eligible for the payment, according to the statement released by the company. That is 4.4 million Americans that were, unfortunately, a victim of this TurboTax scam.

However, this initiative should certainly put a lot of money back in Americans’ pockets, as they are entitled to it. Out of that huge number, there are plenty of families that have certainly been affected by this scam. There is a hope that this settlement can finally give them a sense of relief, and can help them in their everyday endeavors.

There is also a time period in which consumers should have been using TurboTax to be qualified for this settlement. Individuals who qualify to receive a payment are TurboTax customers who used the product in the 2016, 2017, or 2018 tax years and were also eligible to use an Intuit IRS Free File Product. Therefore, this settlement is not available to the entire nation, as there are only certain taxpayers that are allowed to take part in this settlement.

When Will Americans Receive This Check? How Much?

There is a set time period in which Americans across the nation will be getting their checks. “Checks are expected to be mailed throughout May 2023,” according to Forbes News. Therefore, at some point during May, many Americans will receive a much-needed and deserved check.

“Most consumers will receive between $29 and $30. If you filed for three consecutive years, you could get up to $85,” added Forbes News. Although for some, that may not seem like a grand amount of money, it will certainly be of use to many Americans across the country.

There is a hope that these scams can occur less and less, as time continues. There are many families that are in need of support, and companies, such as TurboTax, committing scams of this nature are truly appalling. Many Americans already have many burdens that they need to be worrying about.

However, they were able to own up to this scam that fooled many Americans and could repay them back. There is a hope, all across America, that scams of this nature can occur less. Instead, focus on supporting low-income families, as there are many across America.
