A woman suspected of driving erratically crashed into a birthday party for a young child on Saturday, killing her and injuring several others. Included as injured were the child’s brother and sister, according to a Michigan sheriff.

The incident occurred at an auto body shop in Swan Creek, Monroe County, Michigan.  The Monroe County sheriff’s office reported the incident. The accident, which occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m., resulted in the death of an 8-year-old girl and the injury of her 5-year-old brother, according to the sheriff.

The woman, who has not yet been identified, is believed to have been driving erratically when she drove into the birthday party, which was held in a boat club about 25 feet from the building.

The first responders described the scene as chaotic, with intense emotions among first responders, first responders, and people who witnessed the incident.

Three children and 6 adults were transported to local hospitals by helicopter or ambulance with life-altering injuries. Some of the injured were treated at the scene, and some were transported by private vehicle.

While Goodnough declined to identify the woman who was driving the vehicle, he said she was in custody and being held at Monroe County Jail on suspicion of OWI causing death. He added that she is cooperating with investigators and will likely face additional charges as the case progresses.

Accordingly the woman may have visited a nearby tavern prior to the incident, he said. Adding that police have shut down the establishment and are planning to serve a search warrant on it as part of their investigation.

A Michigan woman was convicted Tuesday of second-degree murder. And other charges after prosecutors said she drove her van drunk into a boat club hosting a child’s birthday party. Killing a young brother and sister and injuring several others.

Marshella Chidester. 66, pleaded not guilty to eight charges he faced in Saturday’s tragic accident at the Swan Boat Club in Monroe County, about 50 miles south of Detroit.

Advertisement During the direct hearing, the right arm of Chidester was in a cast from the elbow to the fingers.

He was in custody and a judge placed him on a $1.5 million attorney’s bond for some of the victims’ families. asked him to set it at that level.

Substance Abuse

Prosecutor Jeff Yorkey, who argued for a $1.5 million bond. Told the court that Chidester had a history of substance abuse problems that his friends and family confirmed.

Accordingly defense attorney Bill Colovos the judge asked, setting Chidester’s bond at $100,000. He said he only drank a glass of wine and a bowl of chili four hours before the accident. And that since November he has been suffering from “epileptic seizures in his legs.”

“It’s not a monster.” Colovos said. “It’s terrible what happened, but some things are out of our control.”

Colovos added that Chidester had no traffic tickets or police record before Saturday’s accident..

If Chidester posts bond, he must forfeit his passport, be alcohol-free, wear a seat belt and not drive. A probable cause conference is scheduled for April 30, followed by a preliminary hearing on May 6.
